In Wouter Van der Hallen’s work, we are offered a restrained use of materials and actions that seek to focus our attention on thinking about the spaces we experience daily. In many cases, the distinctions between the broad labeling of spaces – public versus private or domestic - are effectively broken down and reconfigured. In one sense, Van der Hallen’s practice makes all spaces transitional; everything becomes a kind of entrance hall that we might barely take in or, in some cases, actively channels our attention towards some implied resolution or understanding. In some cases we are literally able to walk into the implied solution, in others, we are actively locked out. Text (fragment) by Ken Pratt
